Hello Families!
I am happy to finally get my site up and running. I am a Level I Certified Wilson Reading System tutor as well as a full-time teacher living on Long Island. I have worked in education for the past ten years and am happy to share my passion and knowledge with the Long Island community of learners.
Currently, I teach a small class of twelve, second grade students at a public school in Woodside, NY. Prior to that, I spent two years working at a non-public school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
As a new teacher in 2006, I witnessed an extreme lack of reading instruction that actually offered concrete intervention for struggling readers. I worked with both general and special education students and found myself at a loss for teaching the specific rules that come with understanding written English language. The Orton-Gillingham-based program “Fundations” was the one program I felt was geared towards providing students with a solid background for reading instruction. Desperate to help my students and also feel successful as an educator, I searched for deeper training that would arm me with specific rules to teach my students and get them reading. During the summer of 2008, I attended a month-long certification program in the Wilson Reading System offered through the International Dyslexia Association. For four weeks, I worked closely with a cohort of seven other candidates, and under the guidance of a kind and patient Wilson trainer. I was instructed and guided through the nuances of each step, eventually completing the required hours needed to be deemed a Certified Tutor. Obtaining this certification has been the most empowering feeling I have encountered throughout my career; each year I demystify the experience of reading for students within the walls of my classroom, as well as with my private clients throughout Long Island and Manhattan. My passion is Wilson and I teach the program with true fidelity.
Recently, the IDA recognized all individuals Level I Certified in the Wilson Reading System as Wilson Dyslexia Practitioners.
I’m hoping to extend my services to students on Long Island; if you are reading this post, perhaps you or a loved one are seeking intervention at this time. I work with students from ages 5 – 15 and travel between Manhattan and the Hamptons. My summer work is mostly out east, however I do see clients in the city as well. Feel free to email me at longislandreadingtutor@gmail.com with questions or concerns and thank you for your time!
